TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — Pierce County prosecutors have charged the ex-wife of a retired Tacoma, Wash., police detective with multiple counts of identity theft, forgery and theft.

They allege that Rhoda Ramirez took advantage of the man, who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. Ramirez is also a former Tacoma police officer.

The News Tribune reports that Ramirez’s lawyer Barbara Corey says the things her client is accused of were done with her ex-husband’s consent.

Ramirez was charged Monday. She has not been arrested.

The couple divorced in 1999. In 2008, Ramirez moved back in with her ex-husband, who was forced to retire in 2010 because of his disease. Court papers say that his brother and employees at his credit union later became concerned about his dwindling account.

Court records say the man told police he had given his ex-wife permission to use his checks to pay their household bills but had not given her permission to spend his money on her daughters or anyone else.
