PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Police say a man was fatally shot during a confrontation with officers near Wilson High School in southwest Portland and an officer was wounded.
Sgt. Pete Simpson says the officer’s injury is not life-threatening.
The Oregonian reports that police and witnesses say an officer bleeding from an upper-arm wound was taken to a hospital late Wednesday afternoon.
The gunfire came after officers responded to reports of a suspicious man driving a van near the school. The police spokesman says it’s not clear whether the dead man is the same person referenced in the suspicious man reports.
Witness John Canda told the newspaper he saw a uniformed officer tell a man to stop. Canda says the man sat down on a retaining wall, then stood and turned toward the officer. Canda says that’s when he saw the officer fire. He later saw a gun beside the man’s body.
Simpson confirms police recovered a gun near the body.
