(1090 The Fan) — The trade talks involving Mariners infielder Nick Franklin are heating up, according to CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman.
In addition to the New York Mets and Tampa Bay Rays, the Baltimore Orioles have now reportedly shown enough interest to engage in talks with the Mariners about a deal for Franklin. Heyman reports Franklin is a candidate for second base for both the O’s and the Rays — with the Mets, Franklin would likely be an option at shortstop.
The Orioles are using prospect Jonathan Schoop as well as Ryan Flaherty and Alexi Casilla at second base presently. Schoop, a highly-regarded young player, is batting .500 this spring.
Meanwhile, Franklin is hitting .304 in Arizona.
Last month Jason A. Churchill scouted potential returns for Franklin if he were shipped to the Mets or Rays and documented that both teams have prospects that could fill some of the Mariners’ remaining holes.
