C. J. Nitkowski Hates The New Transfer Rule
(1090 The Fan) — C.J. Nitkowski, a 10-year big league veteran, was surprised when he heard the cut of Seattle Mariners right-hander Danny Farquhar saying only closer Fernando Rodney has a defined role in the club’s bullpen. Nitkowski told 1090 The Fan that usually relievers want to know the situations in which they will be used. Farquhar said he actually liked not knowing, but Nitkowski said “that is the most uncomfortable situation for most relievers.” Hmm.
Bill Swartz and Jason A. Churchill asked Nitkowski about the rage of the cut fastball in Major League Baseball right now and the former left-hander said “it’s not easy (to learn),” and noted that Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Kenley Jansen “had a better cutter” than Mariano Rivera the past three years. Will hitters figure out the cutter? Maybe, Nitkowski said, but if a pitcher has an elite one “it doesn’t matter” what the hitter does.
Nitkowski also opined on Felix Hernandez, the relationship between a catcher and pitcher and the transfer rule that has been the talk of baseball this month.
