(CBS Seattle) — Few experiences measure up to the charm and delight that accompany catching an early flight from Sea-Tac Airport. The sweet blare of the alarm at 4 am scaring you awake. The knowledge that, despite your best efforts, there will be no way to fit all necessary possessions into your tiny carry-on bag. Sweating with anxiety as you race to the light-rail, hoping to arrive in time for the final frisking from TSA before the doors to the jetway close.
Nobody is a happy camper at the airport.
Sub Pop Records’ new retail store inside Sea-Tac, however, may change the attitudes of the many travelers who loathe the wait that occurs between finishing the security check and boarding a plane. Yes, the record label has instantly turned the Central Terminal into the cool terminal.
On Thursday, May 1, the store held its grand opening and welcomed travelers in to shop at 9 am.
It’s not just music and t-shirts from Sub Pop artists, it’s all kinds of Pacific Northwest-related merchandise; Sub Pop-branded coffee from Lighthouse, wooden iPhone cases, vinyl iPhone cases, skateboard decks, wallets, tote bags, backpacks, books, notebooks, posters, sticker packs, pint glasses, flasks (yes, flasks!) headphones and enough clothes to keep you from doing the laundry for weeks.
Ignoring the music is impossible, though. There’s a healthy sampling of the Sub Pop catalog (i.e. THEESatisfaction, Fleet Foxes, Mudhoney, Nirvana) — as well as material from its subsidiary label, Hardly Art, and other Northwest labels like Olympia’s K Records. If you are unfamiliar with anything, you can get a preview of it on one of the store’s iPad’s too.
No, you are not going to magically start enjoying spending time with thousands of cranky travelers, but the practice of tuning them all out just got easier.
