SEATTLE (CBS Seattle) – The military is putting more Star Wars into its defense programs.

Boeing successfully tested a mobile laser weapon that is capable of shooting down enemy drones, reports Live Science.

Its High Energy Laser Mobile Demonstrator (HEL MD) was able to hit over 150 drones, rockets and other mock targets.

The 10-kilowatt, high energy laser was mounted on a military vehicle at a testing ground at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida.

The Pentagon is hoping that mobile lasers will work alongside kinetic strike weapons, which involves firing a non-explosive missile at high speeds to destroy a target.

Kinetic systems are much more expensive and can be limited to the number of missiles on hand.

By 2016, the military plans to test a 30-kilowatt laser, according to the Office of Naval Research.
