Rivals Portland And Seattle Play To 0-0 Draw in NWSL

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Portland Thorns and Seattle Reign played to a scoreless draw in a rivalry match that drew 18,114 fans to Providence Park on Sunday, even without the U.S. national team stars playing.

Michelle Betos had four saves in her third start of the season for the Thorns, who remained the National Women’s Soccer League’s only undefeated team.

Portland (3-0-4) was without goalkeeper Adrianna Franch, defenders Emily Sonnett and Meghan Klingenberg and midfielders Tobin Heath, Lindsey Horan and Allie Long, who have all been called up to the U.S. national team.

The Reign (2-3-2) were without goalkeeper Hope Solo, also called up for a pair of matches against Japan. Hayley Kopmeyer started for Seattle in Solo’s absence and had two saves.

Because of lightning and the possibility of severe weather in the forecast for the Houston area, Sunday night’s match between the Dash and the Washington Spirit was postponed. It has not been determined when the match will be played.

The Chicago Red Stars, who sit in first place in the league, played to a 1-1 draw with Sky Blue on Sunday.

FC Kansas City earned its first victory of the season with a 2-0 win at home over the Orlando Pride on Saturday night, with goals from Yael Averbuch and Erika Tymrak. The Western New York Flash beat the Boston Breakers 4-0 on Friday night to open the weekend’s league play.
