SEATTLE (CBS) — The Pacific Northwest is carrying out a massive earthquake and tsunami drill this week.
Cascadia Rising 2016 is an exercise to address the fallout and emergency response to a potential 9.0 magnitude earthquake and resulting tsunami along the Cascadia Subduction Zone. The 4-day exercise will last from June 7-10. Entities in Washington state, Oregon, and Idaho will all participate.
There are a number of Federal agencies participating, including the American Red Cross, the U.S. Coast Guard, Department of Energy, Department of Transportation, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Justice (DOJ), and more.
In July of 2015, The New Yorker published an article about the potential for a Cascadia Subduction Zone (CSZ) earthquake. A CSZ earthquake occurs once ever 200 to 500 years, on average. The last CSZ earthquake was in 1700 (316 years ago).
