Rainiers Stumble In Late Innings, Lose 9-4 To Bees

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah. – The Tacoma Rainiers (36-28) surrendered eight runs in the late innings and ultimately fell to the Salt Lake Bees (31-32) by a final score of 9-4 on Tuesday night at Smith’s Ballpark.

First baseman Efren Navarro led the Rainiers 11-hit effort with a 3-for-4 night, while left fielder Daniel Robertson (2×4) and designated hitter Dario Pizzano (2×3) also contributed multi-hit performances.

Starting pitcher Donn Roach worked 6.1 innings for Tacoma, allowing four runs on nine hits while walking one and striking out four.

Following a Mike Zunino single to open the top of the second inning, Navarro smacked a two-run home run to right field to give the Rainiers an early 2-0 lead.

Zunino doubled the Rainiers lead with a two-run single in the top of the fifth inning. Third baseman Tyler Smith and center fielder Boog Powell notched back-to-back singles to open the frame, and both came around to score on Zunino’s base knock.

After plating one run in the bottom of the fifth to cut into the Rainiers lead, Salt Lake pushed across four run in the bottom of the seventh to grab a 5-4 lead. Ryan Jackson, Quintin Berry, and Rafael Ortega all notched RBI singles in the seventh, while a double steal of second and home added a fourth run.

Salt Lake tacked on four additional runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to extend their lead to 9-4.

Reliever Kraig Sitton took his first loss of the season after allowing the go-ahead runs in the seventh inning.

Tacoma right-hander Cody Martin (5-3, 5.12) and Salt Lake lefty Nate Smith (3-2, 4.62) square off on the mound as the Rainiers and Bees continue their series tomorrow, Wednesday, June 15. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. PT.
