Tacoma Winning Streak Ends With 8-4 Loss In Fresno

FRESNO, Calif. – The Tacoma Rainiers (43-33) dropped an 8-4 decision to the Fresno Grizzlies (37-38 on Saturday night at Chukchansi Park, ending the Rainiers four-game winning streak.

The Rainiers offense hammered out 12 hits, but went just 3-for-10 with runners in scoring position and stranded nine runners on base. Designated hitter Stefen Romero (2×4), catcher Mike Zunino (2×4), and third baseman Zach Shank (2×4) all logged multi-hit efforts.

Starting pitcher Brad Mills took his third loss of the season after allowing seven runs on nine hits over 4.0 innings of work – he walked three, struck out three, and surrendered one home run.

Fresno drew two walks and swatted four hits in the bottom of the second as they took an early 5-0 lead over the visiting Rainiers.

An RBI single from Jon Kemmer in the bottom of the third added a run to the Grizzlies lead, giving them a 6-0 advantage.

A leadoff home run from Patrick Kivlehan and an RBI double off the bat of Dario Pizzano cut into the Fresno lead with a pair of runs.

Another run from Fresno put the Rainiers down 7-2 going into the top of the seventh inning. Three consecutive singles to open the frame set up a two-run single to left field from Zunino, bringing Tacoma within three runs at 7-4.

The Grizzlies quickly answered with a run in the bottom of the seventh with Jack Mayfield roped an RBI single, creating the final margin of 8-4.

Rainiers right-hander Joe Wieland (6-4, 7.18) takes the mound for Tacoma as they continue their series against the Grizzlies tomorrow, Monday, June 27. Fresno is scheduled to start right-hander Brad Peacock (2-3, 4.59). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PT.
