SEATTLE — The University of Washington men’s basketball 2016-17 non-conference schedule features eight home contests, a Thanksgiving tournament in Las Vegas and three true road matchups, head coach Lorenzo Romar announced Wednesday. Washington will face two teams that advanced past the first round of the 2016 NCAA Tournament, one at home and one on the road, in Yale (NCAA Second Round) and Gonzaga (NCAA Sweet 16).
UW’s exhibition game will be against Western Washington on Thursday, Nov. 3, kicking off five-straight home contests at Alaska Airlines Arena. The first official regular-season game will be against Yale on Sunday, Nov. 13 followed by meetings with Cal State Fullerton (Thursday, Nov. 17), Northern Arizona (Sunday, Nov. 20) and 2016 NIT competitor Long Beach State (Tuesday, Nov. 22).
After those five home games, Washington heads to Las Vegas for the Global Sports Classic where it will face Western Kentucky at the Thomas & Mack Center on Thursday, Nov. 24. UW will then face either UNLV or TCU on Nov. 25 to conclude the tournament.
There is a chance Washington could face TCU twice during its non-conference slate as it heads to Fort Worth to take on the Horned Frogs on Wednesday, Nov. 30 to kick off a two-game road trip. The Huskies won last year’s meeting between the two squads 92-67.
The Huskies then head to Spokane to take on the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Wednesday, Dec. 7 which will mark the first time since Dec. 6, 2006 that the Dawgs have competed against the Zags in Spokane. Washington holds an 11-9 record away from Seattle against Gonzaga and an overall 29-15 mark.
Following the in-state matchup, Washington returns home to take on Nevada on Sunday, Dec. 11, Western Michigan on Sunday, Dec. 18 and Cal Poly on Tuesday, Dec. 20 before concluding the non-conference slate at Seattle U (Key Arena) on Thursday, Dec. 22.
Game times will be announced at a later date once television selections have been made.
