Rainiers Topple Bees In Extras, 4-1

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Stefen Romero lifted the Tacoma Rainiers (57-42) to a 4-1 extra-innings victory over the Salt Lake Bees (47-51) on Saturday night at Smith’s Ballpark.

Romero’s three-run home run in the 11th inning, his third homer in the last two games, provided the difference in the game. Second baseman Daniel Robertson (2×5) and Zach Shank (3×4) were the only Tacoma players to notch multiple hits.

Rainiers starting pitcher Zach Lee held the Bees to just one run on two hits over 7.0 frames, walking three and striking out seven. He did not factor into the decision.

Tacoma finally broke through for the game’s first run in the top of the sixth inning. Center fielder Guillermo Heredia swatted an RBI single into center field to score shortstop Tyler Smith from second base, giving the Rainiers a 1-0 edge.

Salt Lake’s Sherman Johnson quickly tied the game at 1-1 with a two-out, solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Bees loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning before Tacoma reliever Donn Roach induced an inning-ending double play, sending the game to extra innings.

With two outs in the top of the 11th inning, and facing a three-two count, Romero roped a three-run go-ahead home run over the left field wall to push the Rainiers out in front, 4-1.

Donn Roach earned the win after working 1.2 scoreless innings, and Blake Parker notched his 16th save of the season with a pair of strikeouts in the bottom of the 11th inning.

The Rainiers and Bees continue their series with game three tomorrow, Sunday, July 24 at 6:05 p.m. PT. Tacoma will utilize right-hander Sam Gaviglio (0-0, 4.50), while Salt Lake has yet to name a starter.
