TACOMA, Wash. – The Tacoma Rainiers (63-45) dropped a 4-2 decision in 12 innings to the Albuquerque Isotopes (47-60) on Sunday afternoon at Cheney Stadium.
Starting pitcher Jarrett Grube worked 6.0 innings for Tacoma, holding Albuquerque scoreless on four hits – He issued two walks and struck out five.
The Rainiers broke through with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Daniel Robertson lifted a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Zach Shank from third base, giving Tacoma the 1-0 lead.
The Isotopes were down to their last trike in the top of the ninth inning when Dustin Garneau smacked a game-tying solo home run over the left field fence, evening the score at 1-1.
Albuquerque took the lead with three runs in the top of the 12th inning on a two-out, two-run double to right-center field from Jordan Patterson, followed by an RBI single from Stephen Cardullo, giving the Isotopes a 4-1 advantage.
Tacoma answered with a run in the bottom half of the 12th inning on a sacrifice fly from Robertson to once again plate Shank, creating the final margin of 4-2.
Relievers Emilio Pagan, Blake Parker, and Andrew Kittredge combined to surrender four runs on seven hits over the final 6.0 innings of the game, issuing one walk, while striking out eight.
Tacoma and Albuquerque square off again tomorrow, Monday, August 1 at 7:05 p.m. PT. The Rainiers are scheduled to start right-hander Taijuan Walker (0-0, 0.00), while the Isotopes are slated to go with righty Jeff Hoffman (5-8, 3.95).
