RENO, Nevada. – A big night from right fielder Stefen Romero wasn’t enough to send the Tacoma Rainiers (75-58) to victory, as they fell to the Reno Aces (72-62) by a score of 12-3 on Friday night at Greater Nevada Field.
Romero (3×5) finished just a double shy of hitting for the cycle while scoring twice and driving in one run. First baseman Dan Vogelbach (2×4), designated hitter Dae-Ho Lee (2×3), and shortstop Tyler Smith (2×3) chipped in with their own multi-hit nights.
Reno ran out to a 5-0 lead before the Rainiers first venture onto the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning. Romero opened the frame with a triple to left field and came in to score on a wild pitch with Lee batting, cutting the Aces lead to 5-1.
The Aces countered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on five hits, four of which were doubles, making the score 9-1.
Romero sent out his 21st home run of the season in the top of the sixth inning for the Rainiers second run of the night, chipping into the Aces lead at 9-2.
Two Tacoma hits and a pair of Reno errors in the top of the eighth inning gave the Rainiers one last run. However, the Aces would counter with three runs in the bottom of the frame to push their advantage out to 12-3.
Rainiers starting pitcher Joe Wieland (12-6) allowed nine runs on 11 hits through his 4.0 innings of work – he issued two walks, struck out four, and allowed one home run.
Kraig Sitton (2.0) and Evan Scribner (1.0) worked three scoreless innings of relief while holding the Aces to just one hit. David Rollins worked the bottom of the eighth inning and allowed three runs on three hits.
Tacoma and Reno continue their series tomorrow, Saturday, August 27 with a first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. PT. Rainiers right-hander Jarrett Grube (1-4, 3.94) and Aces righty Matt Buschmann (8-10, 5.33) are set to square off on the mound.
