TACOMA, Wash. — The Pacific Coast League today announced that Tacoma Rainiers outfielder Stefen Romero and designated hitter Dan Vogelbach have been named to the 2016 All-PCL team.
This marks the first time since 2001 that multiple Rainiers players have garnered All-PCL honors, when Todd Betts (1B), Ramon Vasquez (SS), and Dennis Stark (SP) were recognized.
Vogelbach, 23, currently leads the PCL with 90 walks, and ranks among the league leaders in RBI (third, 90), on-base percentage (second, .417), and games played (tied-third, 127). His strikeout-to-walk ratio of 1.1 is the second best mark among players with at least 350 at-bats this season.
The Orlando, Florida native opened the season with the Iowa Cubs, logging time in 89 games before the Seattle Mariners acquired him along with teammate Paul Blackburn (RHP) in a trade with the Chicago Cubs on July 20 in exchange for Jordan Pries (RHP) and Mike Montgomery (LHP).
Vogelbach was named PCL Player of the Week for May 9-15 after hitting .333 with six runs, two doubles, three home runs, and eight RBI while drawing seven walks. He was also named the PCL’s starting first baseman in the 2016 Triple-A All-Star Game.
Romero, 27, continues to climb up numerous franchise offensive leaderboards, while also ranking among the league leaders in batting average (seventh, .314), RBI (tied-fifth, 84), slugging percentage (fifth, .558), and total bases (fifth, 226).
Now in his fourth season with Tacoma, Romero finds his place among the club’s all-time greatest position players, ranking second in RBI (273), fourth in doubles (91) and triples (16), fifth in hits (424) and total bases (730), and sixth in runs (224) and home runs (61).
Romero was selected to start in left field for the PCL in the 2016 Triple-A All-Star Game after hitting .335 with 33 extra base hits and 54 RBI in the first half – it was the second mid-season all-star selection of his career.
The Rainiers wrap up their regular season play with an eight-game homestand at Cheney Stadium against the Fresno Grizzlies and Reno Aces, starting today. Tacoma currently leads Reno by 3.5 games in the Pacific Northern Division playoff race.
