T-Birds Take Down Chiefs In Preseason Game

EVERETT, September 4, 2016 – The Seattle Thunderbirds defeated the Spokane Chiefs 4-3 Sunday morning in a preseason game at the Everett Silvertips Holiday Inn Preseason Classic at Xfinity Arena.
The T-Birds finish the Classic with a 2-1-0-0 record. They beat the Everett Silvertips 3-1 Friday night and lost to the Tri-City Americans 5-3 Saturday afternoon.
The T-Birds next preseason appearance will be in Kennewick at the Red Lion Hotels’ Preseason Tournament at the Toyota Center. The T-Birds will play the Kootenay Ice on Friday, September 9, at 3pm and face the Tri-City Americans on Saturday, September 10, at 7:05pm.
Seattle took a 1-0 lead at 7:53 of the first period on Elijah Brown’s first goal of the preseason. Bryan Allbee took a slap shot from the right point with Brown in front of Spokane goalie Donovan Buskey. Brown knocked the rebound of the shot through the goalie’s legs for the goal. Alexander True had the second assist.
Spokane tied the game 1-1 at 9:29 of the first on a goal from Taylor Ross. Eli Zummack and Jeff Faith had the assists.
The T-Birds outshot the Chiefs 16-11 in the first period.
Ethan Bear gave the T-Birds a 2-1 lead at 3:59 of the second period on a power play slap shot goal. True and Keegan Kolesar had the assists.
The Chiefs took a 3-2 lead on two goals from Eli Zummack. Zummack scored at 9:22 and 10:56 of the second.
Matt Berlin replaced Donovan Buskey midway through the second period. Buskey made 18 saves on 20 shots.
Brandon Schuldhaus tied the game 3-3 at 19:18 of the second on a slap shot. Kolesar and Garan Magnes worked the puck to Schuldhaus to set up the tying goal.
Seattle outshot Spokane 10-7 in the second period and led 26-18 in shots after two periods.
The T-Birds took a 4-3 lead on a power-play goal from Scott Eansor 1:04 into the third period. Schuldhaus and Nolan Volcan had the assists.
Spokane pulled Berlin with 1:42 left in the game for an extra attacker. The T-Birds were able to hold off the Chiefs and secure the win.
The T-Birds outshot the Chiefs 32-28 in the game.
Seattle goalie Ryan Gilchrist made 25 saves on 28 shots in the win.
Berlin stopped 10 of 12 shots and took the loss.
The T-Birds will conclude their preseason schedule with a home-and-home series against the Silvertips. The T-Birds host the Silvertips on Friday, September 16, at 7:35pm at ShoWare Center and then are in Everett on Saturday, September 17 at 7:05pm.
The T-Birds open the 2016-17 season in Portland against the Winterhawks on Saturday, September 24, at 7:00pm in Portland.
The T-Birds home opener for the 2016-17 season is Saturday, October 1, against the Portland Winterhawks at 7:05pm at ShoWare Center.
