KENNEWICK, September 9, 2016 – Nick Holowko scored the shootout winning goal to give the Seattle Thunderbirds a 4-3 shootout win over the Kootenay Ice Friday night in Kennewick at the Red Lion Hotels’ Preseason Tournament at the Toyota Center.
The T-Birds are now 3-1-0-0 in the preseason and will play the Tri-City Americans on Saturday at 7:05pm in their second game at the Red Lion Hotels’ Preseason Tournament.
Matthew Wedman sent the game to overtime when he scored a power-play goal with 19 seconds left in the game to make the score 3-3.
The T-Birds shot first in the shootout and Holowko was the only shooter to score. Seattle goalie Carl Stankowksi stopped all three Kootenay shooters in the shootout.
The T-Birds took a 1-0 lead at 15:23 of the first period on a goal by Tyson Terretta. Wedman had the only assist.
Seattle outshot Kootenay 8-7 in the first period.
The Ice tied the game 1-1 at 8:27 of the second period on a goal from Dylan Stewart.
Both teams switched goalies midway through the game. Ryan Gilchrist started for the T-Birds and made 11 saves on 12 shots. He was replaced by Carl Stankowski. Declan Hobbs was the starter for the Ice and he made 11 saves on 12 shots. Jesse Makaj replaced Hobbs.
After two periods the T-Birds led 15-13 in shots.
The Ice went in front 2-1 at 8:26 of the third period on a goal from Vince Loschiavo. Nolan Volcan answered back for the T-Birds just 2:18 later when he scored an unassisted goal.
Peyton Krebs scored a shorthanded goal at 18:53 of the third to make it a 3-2 Kootenay lead. Wedman then tied the game at 19:41on the power play.
Both teams had a power play in overtime but were not able to convert.
The T-Birds outshot the Ice 9-7 in the third period and 26-20 in the game.
Stankowski finished with six saves on eight shots in just over 35 minutes of action.
Makaj made 12 saves on 14 shots his half of play.
The T-Birds will conclude their preseason schedule with a home-and-home series against the Silvertips. The T-Birds host the Silvertips on Friday, September 16, at 7:35pm at ShoWare Center and then are in Everett on Saturday, September 17 at 7:05pm.
The T-Birds open the 2016-17 season in Portland against the Winterhawks on Saturday, September 24, at 7:00pm in Portland.
The T-Birds home opener for the 2016-17 season is Saturday, October 1, against the Portland Winterhawks at 7:05pm at ShoWare Center.
