OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The Tacoma Rainiers (55-53) collected their third straight victory on Sunday evening at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, a 5-3 decision over the Oklahoma City Dodgers (56-50).
Tacoma starting pitcher Cody Martin, making a spot start, worked 4.0 innings and allowed two runs on four hits while walking two and striking out two. He did not factor into the decision.
Third baseman Danny Muno (2×4, 2 R, HR, RBI, BB) collected the Rainiers only multi-hit performance, while first baseman Daniel Vogelbach (1×4, 2B) drove in three RBI and extended his team-best hitting streak to 15 games.
The Rainiers jumped on Dodgers starting pitcher Scott Barlow early and often scoring four runs in the first two frames to take a 4-0 lead. Second baseman Gordon Beckham collected Tacoma’s first run with an RBI groundout in the top of the opening frame, and Vogelbach picked up a three-run double to right center field with the bases loaded in the top of the second.
Edwin Rios hammered a two-run home run for the Dodgers in the bottom of the fourth inning that cut the Rainiers lead to two runs at 4-2.
However, the Rainiers quickly responded with a run in the top of the fifth on a solo home run from Muno. It was his sixth home run of the season, and it pushed Tacoma’s lead out to three runs at 5-2.
Oklahoma City mounted one last stand in the bottom of the fifth, moving back within two runs of Tacoma with a solo home run off the bat of Max Muncy. However, that would be the final gasp from the Dodgers offense, sealing the Rainiers third straight victory.
Thyago Vieira collected the save after working the final two frames of the evening. He allowed just one hit, walked two, and struck out one along the way.
Right-hander Chase De Jong (3-5, 6.34) takes the mound for the Rainiers as their series against the Dodgers continues on Monday night. Oklahoma City will hand the ball to right-hander Walker Buehler (0-1, 9.00). First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. PT.
