FRESNO, Calif. – The Tacoma Rainiers (64-67) dropped their series opener to the Fresno Grizzlies (72-59), 10-1, on Thursday night at Chukchansi Park.
The Grizzlies jumped out to an early lead, scoring nine runs in the first three frames to take a 9-0 lead over the visiting Rainiers.
Designated hitter Mike Marjama provided Tacoma’s only run of the game in the form of a solo home run to lead off the top of the fifth inning. However Fresno responded with a run in the bottom half of the frame, pushing their lead back out to nine runs at 10-1.
Rehabbing reliever Shae Simmons (1.0 IP) and utility infielder Zach Shank (1.0 IP) both worked scoreless frames of relief for Tacoma to close out the game.
Third baseman Danny Muno (1×4) and Shank (1×3) collected the Rainiers only other hits on the night.
Right-hander Max Povse (1-3, 7.97) takes the mound for Tacoma against rehabbing Fresno right-hander Lance McCullers (0-0, -.–) on Friday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PT.
