Kevin Pangos scored 26 points and Gary Bell Jr. added 17 for eighth-seeded Gonzaga, which beat Marcus Smart and the ninth-seeded Oklahoma State Cowboys 85-77 in the West region of the NCAA tournament on Friday.
The Bulldogs took control of this one thanks to a first half in which the team shot 54.8 percent. That shooting performance resulted in a 45-31 halftime lead. The Zags cruised from there, the Lions never coming closer than within eight points.
Przemek Karnowski added 12 points and eight rebounds and Gary Bell Jr. finished with 13 points to aid the Zags’ scoring. Gonzaga (20-3, 10-1) earned its sixth consecutive conference win since dropping its first WCC game since 2011 last month to Portland.
Dower Jr. hit a 3-pointer with 1.9 seconds remaining and his team trailing by one point to ultimately send Gonzaga to its ninth conference win, a 56-54 victory over Santa Clara, Wednesday night.
The No. 24-ranked Bulldogs were simply too much for the undersized and less athletic Saint Mary’s squad. Gonzaga out-rebounded them 39-22 and held the Gaels to 31 percent shooting from the field to collect its third straight win.
Eron Harris, West Virginia’s leading scorer, was limited to five of his 23 points in the second half and the Mountaineers couldn’t hold on to a 10-point lead, falling to No. 20 Gonzaga 80-76 on Tuesday night.
No. 11 Gonzaga relieved the frustrations of its first loss with its highest scoring game of the year. Sam Dower Jr. and Gerard Coleman scored 19 points each as the Bulldogs cruised to an easy 113-81 win over Division II Chaminade on Tuesday in the Maui Invitational.
