The Seattle Thunderbirds have traded forward Jaimen Yakubowski to the Moose Jaw Warriors in exchange for a third round pick in the 2016 Bantam Draft.
Thanks to 38 saves from Taran Kozun, those goals held up to give Seattle a 2-1 victory over the Silvertips in Game 1 of their best-of-seven playoff series.
After being outscored 22-3, the T-Birds went into Prince George and came away with consecutive wins Tuesday and Wednesday to end a 5-game losing streak and at least salvage part of the trip.
Brendan Leipsic and Taylor Leier each scored two goals, while the team’s co-scoring leaders, Oliver Bjorkstrand and Nic Petan, added two assists apiece to help carry the Hawks to their 10th consecutive win.
Yakubowski, 19, is a left wing who scored one goal in 11 games with the Hurricanes. Mckechnie, also 19, is a right wing with one goal and two assists through nine games. The two arrived just after 4 p.m. Saturday and skated prior to the 7 p.m. start time.
