Washington Ferry System
After two weeks of demolition at a dry dock in Tacoma, there is nothing left of the iconic Puget Sound ferry Kalakala. Various parts and scrap pieces of vessel have been claimed and will serve as souvenirs to their new owners.
Officials are wondering whether the series of problems is just coincidence, or a more troubling sign of how deeply the state has cut into a transportation system that is a major economic driver and lifeline for many communities.
Authorities are training Monday for a possible threat to a ferry on Puget Sound. The drill calls for officers to deploy from a helicopter by ropes onto the ferry. Others will board the moving ferry from Coast Guard boats.
Fifteen ferry crossings have been canceled in the past three weeks because of staffing issues. That follows 37 cancellations during the busy summer season, compared to only four sailings canceled in the summer of last year.
