The World’s Tournament of Sand Sculpting Champions in Federal Way will begin Thursday, August 18 and be open until Saturday, September 5th! There will be roughly 26 solo sculptors working August 18, 19, 20, 21 (Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). The doubles competition follows the next weekend with 8 doubles sculpting teams.
One of the first organized sand sculpting competitions began in B.C., Canada, in 1986, according to the World Championship Sand Sculpting website. After 22 years in British Columbia, the championship came to Federal Way, just south of Seattle in 2010. 2011 is the 25th anniversary of the World Championship.
This year the event will be spit up over several locations. Fort Myers Beach will host the solo division. Siesta Key, FL by way of the Crystal Classic will host the Doubles. And the Tournament of champions will be held in Federal Way.
What do sand sculptors like about South King County’s sand? The sculptors all seem to agree that the Federal Way sand is awesome to work with. It is glacier sand with sharp fine grains that stick together well. And it is indigenous to the area.
Visitors are welcome to come observe the competition in action. The competition will be held at: 31510 20th Avenue South in Federal Way. For more information on the sand sculpting championship, go to the website at http://www.worldchampionshipofsandsculpting.com.
