In 1949, Armed Forces Day began in the US. President Harry Truman declared it a day to praise the work of the military services at home and overseas. On Saturday, May 19, you and your family have a chance to attend one of these events in Puget Sound and salute our military men and women.

Celebrate Armed Forces Day at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Lakewood! The base will open its gates to the Puget Sound community for the installation’s annual FREE Armed Forces Day Celebration. Armed Forces Day at the Museum of Flight

The Museum of Flight will observe Armed Forces Day with a public display of assets from the various branches of the Armed Forces. Join to view Chinook, Blackhawk, Dolphin and Kiowa helicopters and a RB-S Harbor Patrol Boat. Plus, a special presentation from Rear Admiral Peter A. Gumataotao, Commander of the USS Nimitz Strike Group, will help the Museum of Flight observe Armed Forces Day with an insight into the lives of men and women who serve in today’s U.S. Military from 11:00am – 12:00pm.

64th Annual Armed Services Day Parade

Head to downtown Bremerton to see the Bremerton Central Lions Club Charitable Foundation Armed Forces Day Parade, presented by the Kitsap Sun. See the US Navy’s Parade Band, floats, drill teams and more as the city celebrates the men and women serving in the US military.

Paine Field’s annual airport open-house with many aircraft to see, including vintage aircraft, B52s, and a warbirds air show at 12:00pm. Great food, vendors, kids’ activities and scenic helicopter and bi-plane flights for a fee.

The Rainier Youth Choirs “Made in America” Concert

The concert features RYC’s three youth choirs singing traditional American folk tunes and songs created by American composers with guest instrumentalists on banjo, mandolin, fiddle, and bass. “The “Made in America” theme gave me choices from a huge variety of traditional music and songs by American composers and lyricists,” said Artistic Director Leora Schwitters. “We’ve got bluegrass, a cowboy song, musical theater, a jazz ballad, American Indian, spirituals, gospel, Mark Twain, even some Paul Simon—it’s going to be a very enjoyable and eclectic celebration of our rich musical heritage, leaning more toward the lighter side.”
