(1090 The Fan) — Gonzaga held off a game San Diego team for its third conference win in a row, a 59-56 victory at the McCarthey Center, Thursday night.
Sam Dower Jr. had 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead Gonzaga (17-3, 7-1). Przemek Karnowski finished with 12 points and Kevin Pangos added 11 points and five rebounds. Both Karnowski and Pangos made key buckets down the stretch to keep the Zags in the lead.
Johnny Dee scored a game-high 26 points for the Toreros who trailed from the 7:58 mark in the first half until Dennis Kramer tied the game at 55-55 with a lay-in with just under six minutes remaining in the game.
The Toreros, though, couldn’t quite get over the hump. Karnowski gave the Zags a 57-55 lead three possessions later and the team held on from there.
The Zags shot 48 percent to the Toreros 41 over the course of the game and out-rebounded their opponent 29-26. San Diego (11-9, 2-5), had just four wins in its last 12 games entering Thursday’s matchup, got a terrific game from Dee.
Dee, a junior guard, improved upon his 16.5 points-per-game average coming in by going 8-for-10 from the field and 7-for-7 from the free-throw line.
