PEORIA, Ariz. (1090 The Fan) — Patrick Kivlehan was the hero in the Mariners’ 4-3 win over the Padres in the first game of 2015 Cactus League play.
In the bottom of the tenth inning, the 25-year-old prospect brought in Tyler Marlette with a single — paired with a fielding error on San Diego’s right fielder Rymer Liriano.
Starting pitcher Taijuan Walker tossed two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out a pair in his spring debut.
“He threw extremely well,” Lloyd McClendon said of the 22-year-old Walker. “His changeup was good. The command of his slider is coming along just fine.”
A total of eight Mariners pitchers (including Walker) combined to allow just two earned runs. Mark Lowe, who threw a scoreless inning in the top of the tenth, earned the win.
Jesus Montero, Michael Dowd and Kivlehan combined for a 6-for-7 performance, accounting for nearly half of the Mariners’ 13 hits.
Justin Upton, one of the Padres’ main acquisitions this offseason, hit a towering home run to straightaway center field in the seventh inning.
M’s lefty Roenis Elias will face San Diego’s Andrew Cashner tomorrow at 12:00 PST.
