SEATTLE (CBS) — Millions of fans will be tuned in and ready to celebrate on September 9, when the New England Patriots host the Pittsburgh Steelers to kick off the NFL’s 2015 regular season. A few players will be celebrating a bit more, though: opening weekend also marks birthdays for a few famous athletes.
Here’s hoping their teams can away with a win (because really, nothing sucks more than having a bad day on your birthday)
Andrew Luck, QB
The Indianapolis Colts quarterback celebrates his birthday on September 12 – the day before his team travels to Buffalo for the Bills’ home opener.
Luck is one of the most respected quarterbacks in the league, with good reason: He’s set numerous NFL records, including most passing yards in a single game by a rookie (433), most fourth-quarter comebacks by a rookie quarterback (7), and has the most passing yards for a quarterback through his first three seasons (12,688). This fall, he’ll be celebrating just his 26th birthday.
Are you feeling old yet?
Kroy Biermann, DE
Luck shares his birthday with Atlanta Falcons defensive end Kroy Biermann. Biermann, who has spent his entire career with Atlanta since being drafted by the team in 2008, will see his team host the New Orleans Saints to kick off their season.
Biermann is better known to a national audience through his marriage to Real Housewives of Atlanta star, Kim Zolciak – he has made several appearances on her reality show, Don’t Be Tardy.
Michael Crabtree, WR
The newly-signed Oakland Raider celebrates his 28th birthday on September 11 of this year, the day after the Week 1 Thursday Night opener. The former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver will, hopefully, find some chemistry with young Oakland quarterback, Derek Carr. Crabtree’s performance at training camp has already been impressive, with Mike Florio calling him the “star” of camp.
Just two days after celebrating his birthday, Crabtree’s Raiders will host the Cincinnati Bengals — a team that sees our next player celebrating his birthday as well.
A.J. McCarron, QB
The second-year pro and backup quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals will be celebrating his 25th birthday when the Bengals head to the Oakland Coliseum to face off against the Raiders on September 13.
McCarron drew a great following at Alabama; however, his relationship (his now wife), model Katherine Webb, is what threw the pair into the spotlight following Webb’s appearance at the 2013 BCS National Championship Game.
McCarron has yet to play in a regular season game, and is currently day-to-day with an unspecified injury.
Bishop Sankey, RB
The former Husky and current running back for the Tennessee Titans celebrates his 23rd on September 15, after the Monday Night games are over and teams enter Week 2.
Drafted by the Tennessee Titans in the 2013 NFL Draft, Sankey has yet to make a real breakthrough. Some of that may be a learning curve, but plenty of it has to do with the Titans’ 2014 struggling offensive line and quarterback carousel (Sankey worked with three quarterbacks over the course of the season).
The Titans’ drafted quarterback Marcus Mariota with the second overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. While Mariota (Oregon) and Sankey (Washington) are former PAC-12 rivals, the Titans’ new signal caller should be able to help Sankey see more time — and, hopefully, have a breakthrough season.
