SANDY, Utah (AP) — Javier Morales and Sebastian Jaime scored early goals and Real Salt Lake held on to beat the Seattle Sounders 2-0 on Saturday night.

Morales opened the scoring in the 12th minute, converting from the spot after the Sounders’ Roman Torres was charged with a hand ball in the penalty area. Luke Mulholland’s 30-yard rocket off the crossbar in the 19th minute rebounded to Jaime, who headed it home.

Real Salt Lake (8-10-8) moved within three points of the Sounders (11-13-2) for the sixth and final playoff position in the Western Conference.

In the 44th minute, Kyle Beckerman surpassed Joe Cannon (30,731) for fourth place in career MLS minutes. Teammate Nick Rimando, who recorded his seventh shutout of the season, is the leader in minutes played.
