A 14-year-old Seattle Prep football player is being called a hero after he helped Bellevue police catch a suspected shoplifter.

Authorities say the 32-year-old suspect was spotted stealing about $800 worth of merchandise in the Target at Factoria Mall.

Then two cops who happened to be there started chasing him. So he ran outside and tried to lose them by running into an Old Navy next door.

That’s when 14-year-old Kevin Merz saw what was happening, ran in out of nowhere, and tackled the shoplifter. Seconds later, the officers were able to jump ing and handcuff the suspect.

According to KIRO 7, local police say they’re nominating Kevin for an award for helping them out, but he says he was just trying to be a good citizen.
