TACOMA, Wash. – The Tacoma Rainiers (58-59) collected a dominant 9-2 victory over the Nashville Sounds (55-61) on Wednesday night at Cheney Stadium.
Tacoma was led by first baseman Daniel Vogelbach (2×3, 3 R, HR, 3 RBI, BB), catcher Mike Marjama (2×4, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI), and designated hitter Dario Pizzano (2×4, 3B, RBI).
Rainiers starting pitcher Sam Gaviglio worked 3.2 innings and allowed just one run on three hits. He walked two, struck out four, and did not factor into the decision.
Ernesto Frieri, making his Tacoma debut, worked 2.1 innings of relief and earned the win. He allowed no Nashville hits and struck out four Sounds batters.
Vogelbach sparked the scoring for the Rainiers with a two-run opposite-field dinger in the bottom of the first inning, scoring center fielder Ian Miller and rocketing Tacoma out to a 2-0 lead.
The Sounds fired back in the top of the second inning, cutting the Rainiers lead in half off of an RBI sacrifice fly by Jaff Decker.
Marjama then stretched the lead for Tacoma to 4-1 with a two-run home run of his own in the bottom of the fourth, driving in Vogelbach. It was Marjama’s first hit in the Mariners organization since joining the system in a trade from Tampa Bay on August 6.
Vogelbach continued his hot hitting in the bottom of the fifth, driving in second baseman Shawn O’Malley with an RBI single. He was followed later in the inning by a bases-loaded double from right fielder Kyle Waldrop that cleared the bases. Pizzano extended the rally, driving in Waldrop with an RBI triple and pushing the Rainiers lead to 9-1 after five innings of play.
The Sounds picked up the final run of the game in the top of the ninth, finalizing the score at 9-2.
The Rainiers face off against the Sounds again in the second of a four-game series Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. PT. Tacoma right-hander Max Povse (1-0, 8.74) and Nashville right-hander Ben Bracewell (1-2, 6.89) will pitch.
