The first Veteran’s Day (called Armistice Day) was proclaimed by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919. Today, like it was nearly a century ago, we remember the heroism of our service men and women and honor our Veterans. In Puget Sound, there are many celebrations and observances to attend.

Auburn’s 46th Annual Veterans Day Parade and Observance

Flags, families and thousands of veterans will line Main Street in Auburn for the mile-long Veterans Day Parade. It will proceed west on Main St. from E St. SE to A St. NW near Auburn City Hall over a period of approximately two hours. The 2011 Veterans Day Parade will pay special tribute to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). Also a part of the celebration is the American Legion’s pancake breakfast and a military flyover. Veterans Remembrance Ceremony and Lighting of the Flame

This special ceremony will feature patriotic music, an honor guard and 21-gun salute. Once lit, the flame at the Veterans Memorial will be guarded for 24 hours.

Veterans Day Marching Band Competition

Over 30 bands will compete in the field competition, which includes great music, drill and precision performances from some of the best high school marching bands in the Pacific Northwest. Admission is charged at the stadium gate (discount ticket prices available for students, children and seniors).

Veteran’s Day at the History Museum

We commemorate this Veteran’s Day by reading aloud a series of recollections written by or about military service members past and present. Members of the public are invited to recount, in 500 words or less, a personal experience related to the American armed forces or a memory of someone who is or was in military service. Free museum admission for active duty/retired military and their families.

A free program of patriotic and popular music will be performed by The Tapestry Singers and Puyallup Valley Community Band in tribute to veterans and those serving on active duty in the Armed Forces.

The Museum recognizes the contributions of America’s veterans at the annual Veterans Day Ceremony. The events begin on the eleventh hour of the eleventh month with chamber music performed by the internationally touring bass and cello duo, Bottom Line Duo. The Boeing Employees’ Concert Band will perform patriotic music from noon to 1:00pm, followed by a 1:00pm ceremony featuring Museum officials, City of Tukwila Mayor Jim Haggerton, City of Tukwila Councilmembers, distinguished veterans, and the Civil Air Patrol Overlake Squadron color guard. There will also special programs for youth, adults and families. On Veterans Day all US veterans and current US military personnel will be admitted to the Museum free of charge.

7:00 am Friday, November 11th – Flag placement at the Lower Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Each of the white marble upright markers in the Lower Veterans Section will receive a flag. Volunteers are needed. The Chimes Tower will play after the program. The public is invited to listen to Patriotic music played by the Chimes Tower while visiting the graves of the Medal of Honor Recipients. At 10:30am music will be provided by the Eagles and Letter-Carriers Band. 11:00am Service of Remembrance begins.
